My name is Ehikowoicho! I am a proud Idoma daughter of Benue. Raised among the vibrant cultures of Idoma, Tiv, and Igede, where language is more than just speech, it is identity, history, and love. As a parent, I realised how easily these beautiful voices can fade in today’s fast-paced world. That realisation sparked my journey to reconnect my children to their roots, through teaching the culture, the words and songs of my Idoma people. From that personal journey grew a passion: to help other families do the same. I created this educational book to make learning our mother tongues simple, joyful, and full of pride. Through every page, I hope to inspire a new generation of children to speak their heritage boldly and carry it proudly into the future. Because our languages are not just part of our past, they are the heartbeat of who we are.
I still remember the day I found out I was pregnant with my first child. I knew amongst all the things I want for my children, the noble values of life, access to opportunities, good schools, and the wider world. I wasn’t going to let a precious part of our identity slip away, our mother tongue.
Our language isn’t just words. It carries our grandparents’ laughter, our people’s stories, the rhythm of our songs, and the proverbs that carry the wisdom of generations. When our children lose that connection, they lose a piece of who they are.
So I began a small mission at home to bring our language into our everyday life. We sang songs in our mother tongue, learnt words, and I told bedtime stories that celebrated where we come from. Slowly, I saw something magical happen. My children began to speak with pride. Their eyes lit up when they recognized words that once only belonged to their grandparents.
I realized that every child deserves to feel that same spark, to grow up proud of their roots and confident in their identity. Not limited to my family, but for every child who deserves to feel that same connection. Every parent, no matter where in the world they live, deserves a simple, joyful way to make that possible.
That’s how Roots and Wings was born out of love, curiosity, and the desire to reconnect. It’s more than a learning tool; it’s a bridge between generations, between the past and the future, between home and heritage.
Now, my dream is bigger than my own family.
I want to inspire and empower other parents and children to rediscover their voices in their mother tongue to laugh, learn, and grow in the language of their heart.
Because when a child learns their mother tongue, they don’t just learn to speak, they are remembering, they are belonging, and they are becoming.
